What could it be?

I am not sure that i would exactly classify what i am going through as a headache.  I have had headaches all my life and this is different.  There is moderate to intense pressure on the sides and back of my head and occasional shooting pains throughout the day.  It has been happening for about 3 - 4 weeks now.  I went to see my GP and he said it was stress.  I also have been having trouble sleeping, waking up with headaches, etc. so he sent me to the sleep clinic.  I have been instructed to lose weight, i am about 30 pounds overweight (i've lost almost 10lbs. so far), to stop drinking (done) and to get more sleep (have gotten at least .5 - 1.5 hours more sleep a night), and stop smoking (still working on that one!).  Anyway, nothing is helping or working to take the pain and pressure away.  I have heard of people having head pain and then all of the sudden dying from a blood clot of something, very scary thought.  Can you tell me what you think this might be?  Should i be worried?  What can i do to feel better?
