What is a Torkelson shunt?

A Torkelson shunt is used to decrease pressure within the ventricles (fluid filled spaces) in the brain. It involves taking fluid from the lateral ventricles and then draining it into the area around the brainstem. It can be used to treat various forms of hydrocephalus, but typically a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt is performed. I hope this helps.
