: HI, I have two questions: 1)On a finger to nose test (with eyes closed) what does it
mean when you miss your nose? Is it significant in an exam? 2.) When walking Heel to Toe, is it
abnormal to almost lose your balance and step out of that straight line?
  Thanks for your time.
Dear Lisa,
Finger to nose testing and walking a straight line are routine screening tests during a general neurological exam.  They are used to assess accuracy and ease of movement.  If a person pastpoints or loses their balance with tandem gait, I would consider to major possibilities 1. a cerebellar problem (inabilty to walk a straight line, staggered, difficulty with turns, and often a big tremor with finger to nose testing) or 2. a sensory problem (unsteadiness with walking or movement especially in the dark). A good neurological exam is needed to sort through these findings as well as other abnormalities they may be present on the exam.  If you are interestred in being evaluated by a neurologist at CCF, please call 1-800-CCF-CARE.  Ask for the neurology appointments secretary.
