What new treatments available

My mother had a stroke in 1990, and never suffered paralysis. Instead, she now has a severe short term memory deficit, phantom pains, no motivation, and seems to hallucinate at infrequent times.  It's an effort to keep her up as she always wants to sleep, and still has a heart condition from multiple valve replacements over the years.  Is there anything that can help in the way of technology and patient care?  My father is the caregiver, and has never had any education on what's best for him to do, so any help you can give will be read and put to use for my mother.  Sincerely, Phil Smith

I think the first thing that is required here is a detailed assessment to see exactly waht is going on. There are numerous possibilities, many of which could be treatable. For instance something as simple as thyroid disease could cause all of the symptoms youmention. Depression is another relatively easily treated condition which could explain many of the current problems.  I think that your mother should have a full baseline assessment by a neurologist, in the form of a new / second opinion if necessary. This should be your first step, followed
by the appropriate treatment once a diagnosis is establised.
