What to do next?

What to do next?

2 years ago I had a lamanectomy.  After surgery I was given a shot of pain medication and the nurse hit the nerve.   The Dr. said oh,,, well I hope it heals.  3 months after surgery I began to have pain in the L. hip and outside thigh.  I can no longer lay on my left side or sit with any pressure on it.  I am pretty much in constant pain.  Nothing showed up on x-rays or on the MRI.  I have been on Vicodin for 2 years.  I no longer can walk for any length of time.  In order to take my daughters shopping I know I am going to have to take the pain meds.  I simply don't know what to do or what to ask my dr. to do.  The practice I go to has an FP and an Internist. Both disagree with treatment.  I have made it quite clear that I would do what I need to do to find out the cause.  (Was it the shot or not)
I think because of the HMO and keeping pts in office they are reluctant to refer.  But if I ask them I know they will.  The problem is I don't know what to ask them to do.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  I have had no tests other than the ones mentioned.  Thank you in advance.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I'm not sure the location of your injection but most are given in the buttocks. If an injection is placed to close to the sciatic nerve then it can be injured. I would recommend an evaluation by a neurologist. A careful history and physical exam should help list the possible areas of involvment. Injection injuries usually are very painful and cause muscle weakness most of the time. It is possible that the neurologist will recommend an EMG - electromyography test to help evaluate any nerve damage. These types of injuries do not show up on MRI scans. In the mean time it sound like you need to be involved in physical therapy and a pain control program so that you can get off the narcotics. Good luck
