Withdrawl from Fentanyl

I have been on opiates since 2003 for Sciatic nerve impingement (Piriformis Syndrom) and RSD/CRPS. I will be ripping off my last 50mcg patch 6-10-2013 . I have 200 Hydrocodone 7.5-500 T's I am hoping to taper off by using the Hydrocodones. I am very afraid. Because I've had 2 very severe heart attacks back to back. C.O.P.D  . Peripheral Neuropathy. Also, would Neurontin help withdrawal?

Have severe l5-s1degenerative disease, t4-t5 s1 t8 herniations, spondylosis, severe narrowing of lower spine. Never ever took pain killers and I'm 47. For two months I've been on Vicodin,Percocet, didlauted, oxymorphone, valium, Flexeril, soma, Ativan, and none of those provided any relief. I was given fentanyl 25 on the patch for a month and really worked for a bit, but still had to take oxycodone 15 mg for break through. Pain still there. Yesterday changed pain management doctors, my last doctor only treated me like a number.  New pain doc increased my fentanyl patch to 50. And is trying a different type of epidural and seems more aggressive in helping me get my back fixed than the other who I felt like just a number.  has anyone been on these patches ? Why  Oxycodone 15 mg if I'm on this super strong patch. I've obviously built up a tolerance to pain meds. I noticed withdrawals when trying to stop the oxycodone even with the patch on. I assume I will be on this stuff for another 2 + months. Increased to 50 fentanyl patch 12 hours later no relief. I started smoking pot, legally. Got my card. But can't be on pain management and smoke. Can anyone explain these patches? What relief should I expect? Withdrawals from both? I am not ready to get off due to pain but afraid when I do because I read horror stories on this stuff. Can anyone help with any of this and provide any information on what worked, what does not. Why does pain meds not work? Are these patches dangerous ? Addictive ? Can I become physically or mentally addicted in two in a half months. Thank you

Hi there!

Neurontin is useful largely for neuropathic pain control and while it may be helpful in the weaning period or otherwise. It is unlikely to be helpful for withdrawal if it occurs. I would suggest discussing the situation and the suggested management plan in detail with your treating doctor.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
