abnormal eeg

I recently had an eeg because I blacked out. The results got back and they were abnormal. I accidently opened my eyes a few times and I moved a little. I read somwhere that that can affect the test results. Would that be the thing that could make it abnormal or is that not enough to do it. Any help on the matter would be great, I don't have an appointment w/ the neurologist until next friday.

Hi there. I just had my first seizure at 38 years old. Like you, my husband witnessed it but I have no memory of it at all.  I was asleep when it started apparently. I woke up kinda propped up on my elbows looking around the room and my bed was surrounded with firemen and paramedics. I was naturally confused about what had happened but felt fine.  I was taken by ambulence to the ER. Blood work, urine test, and CT came back normal. As far as I'm aware, they didn't give me any specific medication, just fluids. I had my first one-hour EEG the other day and that showed apparently some "abnormal" stuff during the time I was drowsy. I never did fall asleep cuz I was so nervous and I did open my eyes several times. They now have requested a 24-hour EEG to be done and I'm freaking out. I KNOW that I'm stressed out, dehydrated, and I don't eat well or sleep well.  I'm hoping that that's the only issue. I really really don't want them to take away my driver's license.....really really scared.  How did your scenario work out?

My daughter, age 25, had a seizure while up in the Sequoia's hiking. She was taken to the ER where they performed a CT Scan and blood work. All came back normal. They gave her Dilantin by IV and told her to see a Neurologist when returning home. She had a sleep deprived EEG with abnormal spikes during the hyperventilation part of the test. She was put on Lamictal. Went for a second opinion and another EEG with the same results. She hasn't had any more seizures since the first one (3 months). Lamictal has been increased to 100mg twice a day. She hates not feeling like herself and very drowsy. Just wondering if she needs this much medication and why she had the seizure at all?

I just recently had my first (that I am aware of) seizure at 35 years of age... My husband witnessed the episode but I have no memory of it happening.  This happened in my sleep this past Sunday night (March 27th)...  After two days in the hospital and the plethora of tests, the MRI came back normal but the EEG showed abnormalities in the back right lobe of my brain.  I was placed on Keppra 1000mg and told that I can not drive for at least 6 months... This week has been a whirlwind of emotions (and minor side effects from the meds).  I have my follow up with the Neurologist on the 13th and of course have a TON of questions.  I am ready to know WHAT caused this but wonder if I will ever know!!!

Any advice or simlar experiences shared are much appreciated!!!

Laura ;)

i had a EEG done recently for frequent migraines and numbness in my brain.  i also had an MRI and an EMG done.  The MRI was clean and the EMG just confirmed I had fibromialgia.  So. I went in for my results of the EEG and was honestly expecting, well the text came back normal but we'll continue to treat...blah blah blah, same story different day....well not the case this time.  i was told the EEG came back abnormal.  i asked what that meant and he just said that it monitored brain waves and spikes and mine were abnormal.  i just hate it when doctors are so vague.  its frustrating and confusing.  he said its like you are having seizures but you aren't.  basically it just confirmed the migraines that i was getting and to follow up again in a month,.  in the mean time he doubled my daily migraine medication, put me on steroids( which amp me up like no other, haven't slept!), and gave me l pain medication for when i get a migraine.  BUT, what i want to know is why?  what is causing this? does this mean something can go wrong and I can get an brain anurism(sp)?  ANY ANSWERS?  PLEASE HELP.

i had a few seizures in July. I have had 2 EEG's done and both came back good. Stopped taking seizure medication trileptal cuz it was not tolerated very well. With 2 normal EEG's and no seizure medication is it likely that I will have another seizure?

My 16 month just had a eeg done and the results came back mildy abnormal.  The reason for the eeg was we thought he might have had a slight seizure last week.  Could have been a muscle cramp, right arm cramped up for around 45 secs.  Now the dr. wants to do an MRI next week on him.  Does anyone have any advise that might help my wife and i from freaking out?  The reason why the test was abnormal was because of 3 spikes throughout the 45 min test.  Spikes were in the same spot of the brain.

My 18 year old Had his first seizure in May .  He had initially gone to hospital with complaints of stomach pain which we thought was his Appendix.  CT scan/ultrasound showed lymph nodes in his stomach/groin/throat were all swollen.  No other signs of infection.  He is fearful of needles and tends to pass out. But when inserting IV had a full blown seizure lasting just over a minute..arms/legs flailing eyes rolled back in his head.  First EEG came back abnormal and a sleep deprived EEG was done today.  Not sure what to expect or possible reason for sudden onset of seizures .  Any ideas???

I had a seizure last May. Blacked out, bit my tongue, and wet my shorts.
It was classic, but I felt it happening before. I just felt very heavy and tired. My office has a door, so later in the day when the symtoms were really bad, I decided to turn off the lights and chill out in a comfortible chair. I have no recollection what happened, but woke up in a heep on the floor.
Again, I had not clue what was happening.
I've had two MRI's with contrast and they found nothing abnormal. The EEG did show abnormal "spikes" located on the back left portion of my head.
A month ago at work, I discovered that I could not write with my right hand. It trembled a little, but I could just not put it together. It was initially funny because how pronounced it was. I felt great and decided to get some water and walk around outside a little. By mid day I was fine, but I did have another MRI and EEG. MRI was clear, but the EEG was more pronounced that before. I am taking lamictal and tolerating it pretty well, but feel like I'm going down the drain.

Can anyone relate t this or give me any ideas what to do next?

I'm not experienced in EEG's, but I was just in the room when they did a 2nd one on my Dad (had a bad accident due to a sudden seizure while driving)and noticed some things:

1)Neurologist said the other hospital that performed the 1st EEG, did not have the connectors attached correctly. It was as if there was sweating and they did not stick properly, which caused "articulations", and the EEG was deemed abnormal, so they did a second one.

2)During the 2nd one, the nurses did a great job hooking my Dad up, and the Neurologist came in halfway thru the EEG, observing it while in progress. He pointed out that a patient must keep their eyes closed and not move. He could see in the EEG, times when my Dad got cold.

There were a few "peaks" during the EEG, but he said it was considered normal.

I would get the EEG done again, making sure to have soft music playing in the background and to not open eyes at all.

This is just my humble opinion, and Demiguise has given you some great advice too. Good luck, dear!

The eeg would record opening eyes or if you were sleeping by the
graft needle recording your functions. Just like a spasm before
a seizure. Eeg is reading your brain & was not the reason that
report was reported abnormal. Neuro needs to repeat reading
himself to see if it matches anything clinical. They try to get
you to sleep so machine can take over.
