abnormal signal in mri

I have been having some ear issues for 3 months.  First everything sounded amplified, now humming.  Tried steroids, did not work.  Tried valium, worked but when finished ear is still humming.  Just had an MRI and it says Moderately extensive area of abnormal signal in left parietal white matter.  No evidence of mass effect, no restricted diffusion, no abnormal extra axial fluid collections.  I will see surgeon in 4 days but wonder if this is serious.  What does Abnormal signal in left parietal white matter mean?
