add causing leg spasm?

add causing leg spasm?

my husband has add.  at night he gets leg spasm so bad, one of us has to leave the bed.  could the spasms be connected with the add?  and if not, can you suggest what could be the cause?

Depends on what you mean by leg spasm.
If you refer to a (sometimes painful) involuntary contraction of muscles which lasts more than a second or two, then there is no real correlation to ADD, and I would look at other causes of muscle cramping or spasms. There are too many causes to list here, and more information would be needed at a doctor's visit.
If he feels an uncontrollable urge to move, relieved only by the movement of the leg, then it's not spasm per se, but could be restless leg syndrome. Again, there is no link with ADD, but it is a different sort of syndrome, with different treatment than leg spasms.
If he has tics (stereotyped, complex behaviors, which are not truly involuntary but rather the voluntary response to an involuntary urge), then that indeed is associated with ADD in many cases.
Your husband should see a doctor. Start with your primary care physician, then if he/she is stumped, you will probably be referred to a neurologist.
I hope this helps. CCF MD mdf.
