aneurysm screening

My grandmother died from a ruptured aneurysm at age 59.  My aunt suffered 5 mini strokes in November 2008 and as a result of testing an aneurysm was discovered.  She had the coiling procedure last month and did "ok".  Because of the family history, my mother and her twin were tested and both have been diagnosed with having aneurysms.  My mother has two.  Between the three siblings, there are 13 children, including me.  The interventional radiologist working with my family has strongly advised that each of us have an MRA done within the next 6 months.  Some research I have read suggests that screening is controversial.  It's all really just so overwhelming.  Any advice... anything.  Thank you.

Hi there - I am very sorry to hear about your grandmother.

From what I've read and seen on different boards, when there is a high rate of these in the family it is a very good idea to be screened. Some people choose not to because they don't want to know and others do it and are grateful for the peace of mind. It is controversial. Here was my surprise last year. I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor and aneurysm. I later found out my grandfather had an aneurysm as well and am learning more about my family history.

It seems that there is a strong possibility of family connection. I think if its coming from a interventional radiologist, who works with these all the time, that you can take the suggestion with great confidence. He or she is definitely looking out for your best interest.

Best wishes with your decision.
