arachnoid cyst - fever- prior zoloft question

by clynnm, Jun 05, 2001 12:00AM
I posted a question  on 5-17 about zoloft and seizures, my son has been in hospital again but not for another seizure this time they thought he had meningitis, they kept him for 5 days giving him antibiotics thru iv he had fever never went over 102.4 and all his aches were above his waist chest, arms, wrists and headache. They called a doctor in from pittsburgh who toke him off zoloft. He is now still taking Tegretol and they sent him home on antibiotic. He still has a low grade fever they are doing tests for all kinds of things, they said they don't believe he had meningitis but they are not sure what he had or still has. They did an mri about 2 weeks ago after seizure and found an arachnoid cyst in right temporal lobe next to old injury site. When we were discharged from hospital on Sunday the nurse doing paperwork mentioned to us that she heard doctors talking that maybe this cyst is causing this low grade fever ect..Could this be? I'am so confused and scared for my son. The doctor that came up from Pittsburgh just dropped the Zoloft no weaning will this cause any side effects for him and how long does it take for zoloft to be out of his system.I might just need to come to Cleveland to see someone there, I feel we aren't getting any real answers. I would really appreciate any info you could give me as to what is going on I know you can't be sure since you have't seen him or any med info.Thank you so much for your time. Carol in PA

Dear Carol:

Sorry that your son has had some recent problems.  What did they find in the CSF?  Was it abnormal? Why did they continue the antibotics for 5 days when they didn't think he had meningitis?   I had thought you said that on a prior MRI they found a cyst near the old surgical site, is this the same as you now mention or a new cyst?  I would doubt that the archnoid cyst is causing the fevers.  Most likely, it is something that has been there for awhile? (see above) and likely it isn't causing his seizures either.  The quick stopping of Zoloft might cause some flu-like symptoms but they should resolve.

I am not sure what questions you want answered?  I don't know what was causing his headache and upper body achy feelings?  Did he have another source of infection-viral? etc?  What were his blood counts?  I would think that the seizures are caused by his old head injury.  Let me know just what sort of questions you would like me to help with.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
