atypical trigeminal neuralgia or trigeminal neuropathy

by PHYLLISGAIL, Oct 05, 2009 02:18PM
I have very bad pain on the left side of my face following a fall where I broke the cheek bone. The pain began months after the fall.Eye pain, numbed cheek and a feeling of closing nostril and pain between the upper lip and the nose andit hurts to talk in the evening. The pain is constant and worsens as the day goes on.  There is no nerve compression, so it is not TN. One group of neurosurgeons want to kill the base of the nerve with heat or glycerol, a form of rhizotomy.
A second neurosurgeon I saw at another university hospital says that I have trigeminal neuropathy and that these surgeries could my my condition worse. I cannot tolerate the meds like tegretol or neurontin.

Who to believe and what to do? The second neurosurgeon suggest a procedure if putting a metal plate in the head with a kind of pacemaker to stimulate the nerve, not kill it! Any ideas, opinions?  Thanks to all. I have had this pain for over 2 yrs and it has worsened over time;
