Neuropathy is the name given in general to the diseases that afflict the nerves. Axonal neuropathy is that in which the axons are affected. There are different reasons for this and the course of the disease and response to treatment depends on the actual cause of the disease. If the cause of the disease is treated, the damage to the axons can be stopped from progressing.
Axonal neuropathies, depending on the cause can affect either the sensoryNumbness and tingling nerves or the motor nerves. If it is the sensoryNumbness and tingling nerves, it usually starts as pins and needles sensation or burning sensation and can eventually progress to numbnessNumbness and tingling or can directly appear as numbnessNumbness and tingling. When the effected region of the body becomes numb, it may become difficult to perform tasks with that part, even if the motor system remains unaffected, because sensoryNumbness and tingling signals are necessary for proper functioning of the motor system. When the motor system is affected it too eventually leadsLead poisoning to loss of functioning of muscles. Most times both systems are involved.
