back and neck pain

back and neck pain

i was in a car accident in april and was diagnosed with whiplash. Ever since my pain in the back and neck has increased and left arm and leg have weak feeling in them,  arm and the leg tend to tighten up and eventaly lock up. Ive been to the ER 7 times and no one could diagnose the problem ive had a ct scan and mri. The neck pain is in the upper area of the neck near the head and the back pain is in the center area. ive seen a chripractor and he's tried several adjustments but none seem to help and he thinks its in the cervical area where the brain rests. My neurologist sent me to physical therapy and it did not help it caused the condition to worsen so i was released from it. Im running out of options to figure out the cause of this condition other then go to a nuerospine surgeon or another nuerologist for another opinion. If anyone can help by answering what may be causing this id really appreciate it

Well, since your scans came out normal, then must be your muscles and nerves are on fire, which is very much normal in a car wreck.  When the impact wrenches your neck and back, it pulls everything out of normal position, and that can hurt for a long time.  I sprained an ankle a few years ago, I heard it make a "ripppp" sound and thought it was broke, wore a cast, and to this day I limp when I get tired.

About the best thing you can do is carefully and slowly strengthen your neck and shoulder and torso muscles by stretching them and moving them around, just keep at it.  Also, massage therapy can help, just tell the therapist not to go at it too hard, return for several visits to get it all worked out.  Heat can help pain and discomfort, so can anti-inflammatories like aspirin.  But after a car wreck, it takes many months to get over it, even whiplash is almost as bad as breaking a bone or rupturing a disk.

You could have your scan reports and pictures forwarded to a neurologist or an orthopedist, have him check them over good, to make sure nothing was missed.  He might want to even prescribe you a little temporary soft collar to wear on your neck for a while, might ease up the strain on it when you're up and about.  And he might want to do a new scan, especially if they only did part of your spine, in case injury is in an additional location to what they focused on.  And a neuro can also do a nerve test to make sure you have good neuromuscular function.
