back problems

by mattimatt, May 07, 2008 06:49PM
I had surgery back last fall on L5 and S1. I've found that the more I try to get into normal everyday activities the pain (which has never has never gone away) in my back and down my leg and into my foot gets more and more intense. I'm currently taking lyrica which has helped some but just masks the pain somewhat. I realize without the meds the pain is about the same as before the surgery. My question is if you where to perform stretches everyday without properly warming your core body temperature first could this in someway lead to muscle strain which could lead to spinal disalignment and then eventually herniated disc problems?     thank you, mattimatt

Hi there.

I'm sorry to hear that you still have this pain after surgery.  Stretching can help to loosen up some muscles and connective tissues at the back (and hence, may help relieve the pain), however, I suggest that these stretchings be made under the guidance of a rehabilitation medicine specialist, or a physical therapist (so as to avoid the injuries you mentioned).  You should also be following up with your surgeon for him or her to examine the areas that he operated, and report to him any changes that you may experience.  For now, pain medications are your best bet.  Some would try alternative treatments like accupuncture but this should be discussed first with your doctor.

Regards and God bless.
