bladder incontinence

by Carol55, Aug 18, 2001 12:00AM
45 year old healthy female.  only complaint is, I have two fibroids the size of grapes that press into my bladder, when they become swollen, such as before menses.  My question is this,  about maybe once or twice per year, not per month,  while during a deep sleep, I lose bladder control and begin to urinate in my sleep.  (I'm usually dreaming I'm in the bathroom)  As soon as I fully wake up, I can certainly stop the stream and head for the bathroom. (How embarrassing)  But my concern is, could this be my fibroids, or the start of multiple sclerosis.  I have no other health concerns.  I've had the fibroids about 5 years, and am trying to wait until completion of menopause, as the doctor says they will usually just shrink away by then.  Sometimes I hardly know they are there and other times the pressure on my bladder is terrible.
Any ideas on the incontinence issue?
Thak you for your time.

The urinary incontinence alone without other neurological symptoms such as leg weakness/numbness, or anything else would be an uncommon presentation for MS. It sounds like you already have a potential source for your problems (fibroids). Tell your gynecologist about these symptoms.  If you continue to have these symptoms once the fibroids are gone or removed, or if the symptoms get worse and start to include neurological symptoms then I would be concerned about a possible spinal cord problem. Good luck.
