brain damage

My father in law, who has been ill and hospitalized for some time now with recurrent Pneumonias and UTI's, developed sepsis and his blood pressure was very low- 64/38- in this range for about 1-2 hours.  They tried to increase his pressure with dopamine, but finally they transferred him to the ICU and they used other meds which worked better.

Now he has been afebrile with normal pressure for about 1 week.  He sleeps alot, stares when awake and does not communicate.  He did not communicate much in the past, due to metabolic encephalopathy; however he could speak and did not sleep so much.  Just wondering if the low blood pressure could have caused further damage to his brain.  Thank you.

I can't answer you'r other questions however I do know(worked in a nursing home for 20yrs) that a severe UTI will cause confusion in the elderly.
I hope your FIL is doing better now.
