burning sensation in my toe

burning sensation in my toe

Dear doctor,

since 5 years ago I have some spinal problems (lower back pain) quite successfuly compensated by exercising and physiotherapy. My therapist says there is probably a hernia in some segment (L5 probably) of my spine, but since my symptoms are not severe, no other treatment is necessary.
A week ago while apline skiing I started to feel a weird buring-like sensation in one of my toes (right foot). It is kinda uncomfortable... Im going to see my therapist on Thursday, but started to be a bit scared if this is connected to my back troubles or not or if it could be a sign of something even more serious...

Thanks for your help,

Tomas

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
Burning sensation in the toe is very suggestive of nerve compression. This nerve compression could be the result of disc herniation in the lumbar spine or at the level of ankle.
I would suggest you to rest your foot and do some gentle ankle and toe exercises. Ice packs in the lower back will also help. You can also take OTC B12 supplements.
Please consult your neurologist at your earliest. Good luck!
