burning sensations on body

    Pleas if any one can help, i have had burning sensations on my legs and arms for two years, after blood test and nerve test thier is still no cause found if any one has got this are know what it might be or what causes it please let me know, not knowing is worrying me very bad.           thank you jim

Thanks for your question.  The symptoms described in your message could be
the result of small fiber polyneuropathy.  You did not mention in your
message whether or not you have any other medical problems, such as diabetes,
high blood pressure, back pain problems, etc. thus it is difficult to
develop a proper set of differential diagnosis.  You mentioned blood and
nerve tests - which ones were performed?
It is not uncommon for the investigation of a small fiber (purely sensory)
polyneuropathy to be completely negative, but it is important to eliminate
the most omninous possibilities which include: diabetic polyneuropathy,
amyloid neuropathy, paraneoplastic (related with remote effects of cancer),
connective tissue disorder, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance,
vitamin B12 deficiency, and hereditary sensory neuropathy.
If the investigation is indeed negative, two medications that are usually
helpful in aleviating the symptoms are carbamazepine (Tegretol), and
gabapentin (Neurontin).
