calcified spot on CT Scan 15 yo female

calcified spot on CT Scan 15 yo female

My daughter passed out at school and was taken to the ER where she had tests done that I was told were negative and she was released. I took her to her pediatrician for her follow-up appointment from the ER. The pediatrician told me that the CT Scan from my daughters ER visit showed calcifications and that she wanted an MRI done to see if the blood vessels were affected. The pediatrician did not know for sure if the calcifications were related to my daughters fainting spell or not.
My question is how common are calcifications in teenagers and what benign condition causes them? Are they like benign pineal cysts and accidently found and are typically of no concern?

Thank you,gec1492

Hi,
Some of the benign causes of calcification include a calcified pineal cyst and calcified choroid plexus. Also hemorrhage, infection and infarction can cause brain calcification. Also the distribution of calcification is important if it is localised it indicates a tumor, if it is along blood vessel it indicates a vascular malformation.

Hi gec,
How is your daughter now?
Calcification of the brain can occur from several problems. Most calcium that enters the body is deposited in bones and teeth. In other cases, calcification can occur because of brain cancer, vascular problems in the brain (Sturge-Weber disease), some forms of infection (such as tuberculosis or toxoplasmosis or viral menigoencephalitis), or a number of other metabolic disorders or problems with the kidneys.
No, they don’t seem to be benign unless and until they are proved.
