calf pain

my grandson who plays rugby as a pain in his calf and behind knee,when you tap his calf he says it hurts,and when i presss behind knee a pain shoots up his thigh,what could cause this.

It could be bursitis, a torn cartilage/ligament...he should see a doctor to evaluate.
If he gets to a point where he can't bear his own weight, he should be seen quickly.

You could try applying an ice pack ( 10 minutes on/ 10 minutes off ) to see if this helps.

Knee pain usually results from:

Overuse
Poor form during physical activity
Not warming up or cooling down
Not enough stretching
