cause-accident

   Dear doctors,

My boyfriend had quite a bad accident 5 years ago and once again 5 months ago. Recently he has gain some weight and felt a quite discomfort back pain and out of his curiosity he went to hospital to do some check up. According to the test result, doctor told him that he need an operation early next year to correct the condition which the spinal cord is infected as the vertebrae is shifted from it's original position.

I would like to know if there is other alternative than undergoing the operation? As i read over the online article, i found out that a person have a high percentage to be permanently paralyze or unable to survive the surgery.

Please advice.
I want to help my boyfriend so so much.

Thanks in advance.

Hope for good.

Hi,
Dont worry ,with newer advancements in the field of spinal surgery there are ALL possibilities of yor boy friend returning to normalcy. Before a spinal surgery ask him be on diet and reduce a few lbs,it will help in recuperation after surgery. The surgeon should have probably diagnosed a 'slip disc' which is causing the back pain.
Consult a neurosurgeon if you have'nt consulted one yet,if you have consulted one already ,take a second opinion from an orthopaedician.
Good luck.

Based on the history, you're boyfriend has probably suffered from disk herniation.

The disks function as "shock-absorbers" between the vertebrae and while there is no actual "slippage", they may rupture, and when they fail, the gel escapes into surrounding tissue. This can then put pressure on either the spinal cord or even just a single nerve fiber, causing pain anywhere along the area controlled by that nerve.

I understand your apprehensions about having your boyfriend undergo the surgery, but doing nothing in this case would more likely lead to the complications which you are apprehensive about - being permanently paralyzed,

There have been many advances in spine surgery that the risks you have previously mentioned are definitely lower now than before.

Ask your neurologist to explain to both of you the procedure and the pros and cons of it.
