Hi there.  Cerebellar atrophy is a process in which neurons in the cerebellum the area of the brain that controls coordination and balance, deteriorate and die. Cerebellar degeneration maybe the result of inherited genetic mutations that alter the normal production of specific proteins that is necessary for survival of the neurons.  It can occur as an association of ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, cerebellar cortical atrophy, multisystem atrophy, olivopontocerebellar degenerationetc. Other conditions where cerebellar atrophy can coexist are friedreich’s ataxia, multiple sclerosis where the myelin damage can involve the cerebellum. Your age this could be a hereditarydisorder. You could consult a movement disorders expert who would identify and narrow down the problem to a short list and suggest a small number of genetic tests. No single effective medicine for ataxia, gait can be improved with certain walking assisting devices.  Some reversible causes are dilantin overdose. Consult a neurologist and discuss these problems with him for the best diagnosis and management. Take care.
