Hi
This is a question to all that have had Cervical Discectomy and Fusion. What was life like before surgery as opposed to after? My reason for asking is that I have been cancelled twice for surgery and keep wondering if its worth having it done. I have little pain but significant muscle wastage in so much that my left arm and hand is now two inches wider than my right. I was misdiagnosed and a series of blunders has meant that I am still waiting for surgery 19 weeks after two of my discs prolapsed. My arm still feels heavy and one finger numb and the tip of two others a bit numb, but the pain which as I am sure you all know is the most awful pain has pretty much gone. Any advice would be great.
Many thanks x
Thanks so much for the advice. Have not heard of an EMG but will probably have to pay for that as a private patient. Am in the UK but its a slow process under the NHS and my job is at risk. Will have a look at Cervical Myelopathy.
Thanks again for your time and advice

The longer you delay surgery the greater the liklihood of permanent damage or worsening of your symptoms. An EMG can assess for permanent damage at this point. Make sure you get a very good surgeon. Good luck. Look up Cervical Myelopathy. Recovery from those symptoms after surgery could take a year. If not gone after that it is permanent.
Many thanks for your reply. I have seen a Neurosurgeon and he feels that surgery will benefit the muscle wastage and numbness in the hand and arm.
I guess its a decision I have to make, just wish I could be more decisive!

Generally, treatment in cervical disc prolapse depends upon severity of symptoms. Common treatments could be cervical orthosis such as a soft cervical collar or stiffer neck brace to restrict neck movement, pain killers and steroid injections. In addition, cervical traction may also be suggested by the doctor, if condition is severe. Therefore, I can not assure anything without being able to examine you and I would recommend to see a doctor as soon as possible. Hope this helps.
