cystic encephalomacia

cystic encephalomacia

Hi! I am a first time Mother my son is 11 months old. I had the best pregnancy, but when my son was born his cord was around his neck twice, he wasn't breathing when he was born. He had seizures for two days after he was born and he didn't have anymore for about 9 months the Dr. took him off his medicine about three months ago. Then just a couple of weeks ago he started to have them again the Dr. put him on Trileptal 4ml a day. What are all the symptoms of cystic encephalomacia? Is there anything other than theropy to help? Please any help you could give me will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Cystic encephalomalacia is a finding seen in brain imaging studies. The term means presence of cystic areas in the brain. These cystic areas can caused by infarction (lack of oxygen due to blockade of blood supply), trauma (usually occurs during the perinatal period, after birth) , or infection. These are best visualised on MRI scan.
So cystic encephalomalacia is not a disease as such but a finding seen on a brain scan.
I would suggest you to consult a good pediatric neurologist and please be optimistic.
