Over the weekend I noticed what appeared to be a cyst (about 3 cm) on my son's headHead and face reconstruction Head injury Head lice Indications of head injury Radial head injury. It is on the back of his headHead and face reconstruction Head injury Head lice Indications of head injury Radial head injury under the skin. It appears to be attached to his skullCranial ct scan Malignant otitis externa Skull Skull anatomy Skull of a newborn Skull of an adult Skull x-ray. It is hard. I took him to the doctor's office where he was seen my two familyBirth control and family planning Choosing a primary care provider Ewing’s sarcoma Family troubles - resources doctors. The doctors found two additional cysts on his headHead and face reconstruction Head injury Head lice Indications of head injury Radial head injury. One was on the in the same approxiamte location as the original cyst, but on the other side of his headHead and face reconstruction Head injury Head lice Indications of head injury Radial head injury. They also found two more in his groin area where there are lymph nodes (doctor's words). My son is 12 months 2 weeks old. He has trouble gaining weight and it is always a fight to feed him. He weighs only about 16 1/2 pounds and at his first year check up we were told he had lost a few ounces since his previous visit. We were told to bring him back for a weight check in 5 weeks. He has also had RSV in the past (5 months old). Relating all this to the doctors who were seeing him for his cysts, we were told that there is a concern about the weight issue in combination with the cysts that apparaently just showed up (I never noticed them before and rub my son's head at nightwhile I give him his bottle). However, the doctors advised us to come back in for our already scheduled weight check appointment in 5 weeks and inform our pediatrician about the cysts. They said to watch the cysts and if they appear to grow to come back immediately and at that point they may order a CT scan. Is this typical advice...my husband and I feel uncomfortable waiting that long and being given the responsibility to figure out if these cysts are growing. What is to say they are not growing in toward the head vs out...how would we know if that is happening? What could these be from, is it typical for a 1 year old to have so many cysts? When I was 19 weeks preganant, he had bilateral choroid plexus cysts that diasppeared by the 21st week...could this have anything to do with those? Help!
How are you?
One possibility is dermoid cyst. Dermoid cysts are frequently seen in the pediatric age group. These cysts occur in the head and neck region.
The most common presenting symptom is a palpable mass on head and neck. A dermoid cyst contains tissues that are normally found in the skin. Sometimes it can contain glands also which secrete normal substances that can collect inside the cyst and cause it to enlarge.
Treatment may include surgery. The choice of treatment depends upon the health of the child and discretion of the physician.
Please discuss this possibility with your child’s treating doctor. Take care!
Thanks so much for responding Dr. Noopur. So these sound like they are nothing to be too worried about, right? Do you think it is okay to wait another 5 weeks to get into see his doctor (when we have a scheduled appointment) or should we try yo get into see her sooner? What do you think about the smaller cysts in his groin area? Thank you for your input, I appreciate it!
Yes if these are indeed dermoid cysts it is nothing to be worried about and you can wait for 5 weeks to see the doctor.
Is the cyst in the groin painful? If yes these could be boils.
This could also be enlarged lymph nodes. Lymph nodes can enlarge in response to infections like viral fever and common cold.
It is very difficult to tell without a physical examination. Let me know if you need more information. Take care!
Hi Dr. Noopur,
To be honest, I have a hard time locating the cysts in the groin that the doctor found, she said they weren't as large as the ones on his head. I'm not sure if they are causing him pain. He always tugs at his "tinkler" which I have asked about at the doctor's many times before and they assured me that this is normal, that he is just curious about it. As far as the ones on his head...I am wondering if they have been bothering him because he has always pulled at the hair on his head where they were found. I never noticed the cysts before so I just always attributed his hair pulling in that area to be a nervous twitch or just like kids who bite their finger nails. I did call our peditarician today and spoke to a nurse who recommended I come in on wednesday to see his normal pediatrician so we have an appointment sooner now than the five weeks. Thanks again for your help and for the super speedy responses!
