demyelination

by agoceljak, Feb 29, 2008 01:23PM
I was recently diagnosed with MS.  My spinal tap came back with no MS Markers but there were abnormalities in one of the other tests done with the spinal tap.  I have the evoked potential study done and my vision came back fine but I had abnormalities with my arms and legs.  I have demylination in my brain and my spine.  My father is being tested for celiacs disease he also has hasimoto's disease of the thyroid.  Do you know if celiacs disease could be a cause of demylination of the brain/spine?  Thanks so much for your help.

Hello.

There is evidence for Celiac disease as a cause of demyelination in the brain and spine. This issue will have to be carefully handled. Have you suggested this possibility to your treating doctors ?

MS should also be ruled out. The diagnosis of MS is a combined effort after clinical examination, imaging, lab tests, etc.
