disc prolapse at c5 c6
hello..im Umer from Pakistan..
actualy my father has disc prolapse at cervical 5 n 6th nerve for abt 3-4 yrs.he is now 52yrs old..he is also pt of diabetes...he feels pain in joints...swelling in feet and ankle joint...nd numbness in limbs..
he has visited many doctors but few of them recommend surgery and few of them them say him to avoid surgery..kindly suggest me wht shud he do..
he is also a doctor(radiologist)...but want suggestion from a good neurologist..
kindly tell what shud b an appropriate treatment??

Hi Umer, I understand your concern for your ailing father. Well there are two lines of thought. The compressive neuropathy needs to be relieved by discectomy at the affected levels to avoid compression of exiting nerve roots from these levels. However he being a diabetic can have delayed healing and other peripheral neuropathies as part of the disease like peripheral neuropathies. So the outcome would not be worth the risk. This is my contention. You can get an expert’s opinion, a neurologist by posting in the expert forum. All the best and take care.
