: I am addicted to a nasal spray.  Dristan.  It's been years.  I am a little concerned with the long term effects, if any.
==============================================================================
Dear Victoria:
Dristan (oxymetazoline) is a long-acting sympathomimetic local nasal decongestant. The two major problems with its use are 1) Rebound nasal congestion = "Rhinitis medicamentosa", which I guess you suffer from, since you are "addicted" to it, and 2) Cardiovascular adverse effects such as hypertension, tachycardia, palpitation (since the drug gets absorbed in sufficient amounts even with local use). Some people get restlessness, tremor, headache, and dizzines with its use. With overdoses, it can have serious cardiovascular and neurological effects.
Dristan should not be used on a regular basis long-term.
The doctor you need to see most is an otorhinolaryngologist. And you need to come off the medication.
If you live near Cleveland, ENT surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic would be happy to see you. The number to call is (216)444-2200, or (800)223-2273 toll free.
Good luck!
