hi doctor!
i had my MRI and MRA last month. everthing is normal.
my neurologist referred me to a neuro-ophthal to have surgery because im suffering from mono diplopia.
is the surgery a 100% effective? will it correct my left eye?
is there no other way for me to cure this so called *left lateral palsy* without having any surgeries?
please help.
thanks and more power!

Hi.

I am assuming that the problem you are suffering from is a lateral rectus muscle abnormality probably secondary to abducens nerve palsy. The treatment for this condition would depend on the cause and the severity.

Surgery is done via 2 methods, both of which, however, is not 100% effective. If there is still muscle function, the medial rectus muscle can be weakened and the lateral rectus muscle tightened. If no function exists at all, muscle transposition surgery might help to restore some abduction.

A nonsurgical method is an alternative. Botulinum toxin can be used to weaken the medial rectus muscle of the eye that is affected. However, the effect is short-lived and it is necessary to have repeat injections.

Hope this helps.
