I also have the same feelings in both of my feet on and off along with some other people that post here, I describe it as almost a buzzing. I have not found anything to link it to except for the Lexapro I am taking.
The symptoms you are experiencing sound like a nerve condition. The peroneal nerve if traumatized can cause numbness, tingling, and in more sever cases needle-like insertions into the area affected.
I had surgery about a year ago and the first signs of nerve pain were like electric shocks down my calf to my foot. Have you tried an internet search on nerve pain, neropathy, peroneal nerve etc.?
Last year I had surgery on my knee to remove a sarcoma tumour. After the surgery healed I am left with nerve pain, a neuropathic condition referred to as Causalgia. For over a year I have had physiotherapy plus under a pain specialist from the Cancer Clinic taking Gabapentin, Methadone, and Hydromorph Contin to relieve the pain but with minimal effects. It was suggested I also take Lyrica but that medication is for people who experience nerve pain from a diabetic condition. It is not appropriate for my condition.
I am also taking acupuncture. Although the pain is barely tolerable and sometimes intolerable, there is no progress to further reduce the pain. I have also tried a desensitization process whereby different cloth materials of varying rough textures to "train" nerve pathways to accept touch as a normal feeling rather than as a pain feeling. This has not been successful to date.
Hence, I am left with pain with no relief in sight. I must admit a certain degree of anxiety that this pain condition will be with me for the rest of my life and that it will be necessary to take drugs until I die - not a life-giving thought. Also, drugs give me occasional nightmares.
Has anyone similar experiences and if so have you tried anything else that works for you? Has anyone gone to a neurologist to help them deal with this kind of pain? Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.
