encephalitis

HI,OUR DAUGHTER WAS DIAGNOSED BY THE MAYO CLINIC 20YRS AGO WITH POSSIBLE ENCEPHALITIS.SHE NOW IS STAING THAT THINGS WERE HAPPENING TO HER 3-4 YRS PRIOR FOR EXAMPLE MEMORY LOSS AND HALLUCATIONS.IS IT POSSIBLE FOR ENCEPHALITIS TO REMAIN DORMANT IN THE BRAIN FOR A COUPLE YEARS CAUSING THESE PROBLEMS UNTIL IT GOES FULL BLOWN LATER ON.SHE HAS ALSO BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH MS NOW AND WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANY OF THIS COULD BE CONNECTED.THANK YOU FOR YOU TIME

Thanks for writing in.
Encephalitis can occur by reactivation of latent herpes simplex virus. Brain trauma can also activate latent encephalitis. However encephalitis cannot cause MS or vice versa.
MS is an autoimmune disease where antibodies are produced against the Central nervous system which leads to progressive demyelination of neurons.
