excruciating 2 second long pain in head that is reoccuring

Hi,
I am 26 years old and female. For several years now, i have been experiencing this brief pain (by brief, I mean it only lasts for about 2 seconds at a time) in the front of my head. I would say its probably in the front towards the side (maybe halfway between the ears and forehead) and it the most excruciating pain ever. It feels like my brain is going to explode. As i said, it only lasts for about 2 seconds when i have it, and sometimes i will have it a few times a day, sometimes several times a week, and sometimes I might go weeks with out it. But since it only lasts a couple seconds and because it has been going on for so long I have just shrugged it off. I thought for a while maybe it was just normal but I was talking to someone about it and they told me that they dont have any problems like that so I figured maybe I ought to ask a doctor about it. I am in the military and I often will just get pushed off with motrin and sent on my way, so before i make an appointment i thought I would see if I could get an idea of what it could be or if it sounds serious.
