femoral nerve trauma?

by qc4u, May 15, 2005 12:00AM
Hello doctors,

my name is zack im 19 years old.

a month ago i hit a DOORKNOB right into my right femor, I felt a really intense shock going all the way down my quadriceps. the hit became a bit red and a bit black and passed after 48-72h, during these days the point of the hit was tender right at the tip of the pelvis bone meets the groin. after 2 days the leg started to tingle and extremely weak all the way on the quadriceps down on the outer leg and the outer part of the foot.

a month passed and i can cycle, my sport doctor tell me i hit my femoral nerve, but its quite hard for me due to the fact its weak and tingling bad afterwards.

whats going on? how much time it takes until it heals? can i speed up the healing time?

please, these "BED- days" are making me crazy, and i wanna return to full activity.

do i need to fear permanent damage?

thanks

zack

You may indeed have traumatized a nerve. The area that you hit is near the area of the femoral nerve which supplies the quadriceps muscle and the skin on the anterior thigh and MEDIAL part of the leg. If you have loss of skin sensation on the OUTER aspect of the leg, this is atypical for a femoral nerve problem, and there may be a pinched nerve elsewhere

The injury did not seem to be so severe, but nerves heal slowly and it may be several weeks or months before maximum recovery. A good test at predicting the chance/rate of recovery is a needle electromyography study and femoral nerve motor conduction study that can be performed by your local neurologist.

Good luck

Recently I had a pain in the front of left leg about halfway from knee to ankle--shin area.  It was absolutely almost unbearable, but lasted only a few seconds.  About 2 days later, it occurred again.  There was a little swelling and tenderness when my physician examimed it---a great deal of tenderness on either side of the leg.  He ordered a Doppler scan believeing that it was a blood clot.  The scan did not show that, and he did not know what it was.  I am to watch it for several days and see what happen.  I had hip replacement surgery in that hip about 3 months ago.  All went well there, but I wonder if this could be nerve trauma of some kind. As I said, it it tender and I can trace the nerve from the site of the pain up to the hip----a sensitive sensation.  If you could shed some light on this, I would appreciate it.  MamawT
