Hi,
My daughter had a similar visit to the Ped and he sent her to the ER for a CAT scan immediatly, but she was over 100% at nine months. The results were benign hydrocephalus. They said usually resolves by age 2 or so.
Her soft spot was normal, development normal (a little slow as she was a preemie), but nothing out of the ordinary. I relaxed as I was told to do, and tragically my girl passed away 6 months ago from falling and hitting her head.
There were many complications from the hydrocephalus that caused the fall to be worse than it was and after she died they found REASONS for the hydrocephalus that they told me was benign, that ultimately, if had been followed up, would have allowed her to be with me right now.
I am just telling you this not to scare you, but to urge you to seek the opinion of a pediatric neurosurgeon. It is most likely nothing as large heads are common in the first 2 years of life, but I could not stand for another mother to be told it was fine and go through what we had to.
After speaking to the neurosurgeon that operated on my daughter, he said he should have seen her for a follow up 3 months after hte original CT and he would have seen the other problems causing the hydrocephalus and addressed them.
I am just telling you from one mother to another. If I had listened to my gut instead of the doctor my girl would be here now.
I would not worry now as she is not walking yet, but it is something to think about after the holidays maybe.
I hope all turns out well for your daughter.
Merry Christmas.
also she is very tall for her age. shes 30 inches long
Hi...everyone has fluid on their brain...however it needs to be absorb. It also filters to other areas, and moving down the spine.Sometimes the body doesn't absorb enuff or there is a blockage.
Depending on which is the case will depend on what needs to be done.If ur daughter's body can't absorb the fluid or move it down the spine, they may suggest a shunt.
If there is a blockage, also depends on where the blockage is surgery may be required.
I am not real familiar with other methods used if the body is not absorbing correctly.
I would imagine they might do an MRI.....since she is so small, I am not sure.
Keep an eye on her developement, if u notice changes report them to her dr...also u might want to see a NS or NL just to be sure what is going on.I just had testing to check for a CSF blockage, still waiting on the report.
Since ur dr has noticed this so early, I am sure she will be monitored well enuff.
Try and relax and enjoy ur girl and ur holidays !!
Good luck
Godspeed
