grinding of teeth

by Dina__0__0, Apr 14, 1998 12:00AM
have a question regarding teeth grinding and chomping when asleep. My husband chomps his teeth and grinds them every night while he is asleep and so does my 4 yr old son. 4 yr old doesn't chomp his mouth, he just grinds his teeth and it is irritating yes, but I am more concerned about his damaging his teeth or jaw. Could you give me any reason for this?
Especially since it is the both of them.  Like to sleep on the couch due this nature of grinding. Gives me the chills. Could this damage anything for either one of them?
Dear Dina,
Teeth Grinding (Bruxism) occurs to a small degree in most people during sleep, but severe bruxism resulting in abnormal wear of the teeth, gum damage, or jaw pain occurs in only approximately 0.2% of adults and 0.5-2.0% of infants and elderly people. It is may increase during periods of stress. It can be familial.  No pathological lesion has ever been found.  A plastic tooth guard can be worn at night to prevent the noise and tooth destruction. Good Luck.
