hamartoma in white matter of brain and ostoid osteoma in lumbar spine

in may our 10 year old son had a grand mal seizure for the first time, They found a hamartoma in the white matter of the brain, which they say is very small and an ostoid osteoma in the lumbar spine. does anyone have any information reguarding these two things,? Can either one of these cause the seizure? The doctors don't think so.

Dear Debbie,
It is conceivable that the hamartoma could cause a seizure in your 10 year
old boy.  It depends on the location of the mass and nature of the seizure
your son had.  A hamartoma is an abnormal growth of normal tissue.  Sometimes
a more benign or low grade tumor can cause seizures, and this would also be
a concern.  It depends on the appearance of the mass on MRI.  An osteoid osteoma
in the spine would not cause seizure activity.
Speak with your physician as to whether he thinks the 'hamartoma' caused the
seizure, knowing that it could be somethings else, as discussed above.  If
you are still confused, a second opinion to a neurologist would be wise.
Good luck.
