hand shaking since a wreck over 2 months ago

Yes, I appreciate you answering my question.  On August 17, I was in a car wreck and suffered whiplash according to the ER physicians.  I was prescribed Vicodin and other pain relievers.  About a week after the wreck my hand starting shaking uncontrollably whenever I started holding something whether it be chalk when I'm teaching school or my cordless phone or the remote control.  My general practictioner I followed up with thought it could be the Vicodin so he switched me to a different medicine almost immediately.  I haven't taken any medicines since the end of August and my hand still shakes at least one or two times a day really bad.  It also does it sometime when I'm trying to sleep.  My general p. did a test on my thyroid and a traditional blood panel of tests and he had me lay off of caffeine for a week and he said he would refer me to a neurologist but doesn't know if it's necessary or not.  I just wanted to know if you think it is.  I don't want to years down the road be denied insurance or something for a pre-existing condition.  My X-Rays don't show any damage but I haven't been given an MRI or anything.  My parents are scared it's Parkinson's or something but I'm only 23 with no history and I've had no problems walking or talking.  Please tell me what you think.  Thanks so much.

Dear Lori:

Sorry that your having problems with shaking.  It doesn't sound like Parkinson's as the tremor in Parkinson's is a resting pill-rolling type tremor and ceases with movment.  X-rays are good for looking at boney damage and structure but the MRI is better for soft tissues and other anatomical structures.  I would suggest the neurological visit and maybe an MRI of the cervical spine to rule out any nerve root damage.  At least this way, you can ease your mind about possible etiologies.  You must be aware that this might not show anything either, but at least you will have a good neurological exam and some view of the spine.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
