help with understanding an MRI

by michele0513, Sep 26, 2008 10:47PM
I recently received an MRI report and don't really understand it.  Could you please tell me what these statement mean?
Some fluid in the mastoid air cells could not be excluded. The sella appears to be partially empty and the cerebellar tonsils are borderline low. Ventricles are slightly prominent for age as are sulci.  There are scattered areas of punctuated and patchy areas of increases signal in the preventricular and subcortical white matter areas of both hemispheres on T-2 weighted and flair images with similar involvement in the pons.

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
There is a possibility of some fluid in the mastoid air cells. Sella turcica appears to be empty hinting towards and empty sella syndrome. It can occur due to flattening of pituitary gland on the inner walls of the sella. This usually occurs in women who are obese or have high BP. There is slight herniation of the cerebellar tonsils. You also have white matter lesions which can occur in chronic headache, migraine, high BP, smokers, chronic alcoholism, and migraine.
These findings need to be correlated with your clinical symptoms for exact diagnosis.
