hematoma 8 days after ACDF

The first of Sept. my husband had anterior cervical diskectomy with fusion (donor bone).  8 days later, there was a loud "pop" and his neck immediately began to swell.  At our local hospital, an emergency trach was performed and he was airlifted to another hospital where surgeons performed a "correct trach" and repaired the superior thyroid artery.  We are not really getting the answers that we want.  The original surgeon doesn't know why the "clip came off after 8 days".  We think they repaired the artery with another clip.  What are the chances that this one will come off too?  My husband has lost 26 pounds and spent 28 days in the hospital as a result of this "routine surgery". It was 8 days before he could even swallow his own salavia (even that didn't stop them from trying to put a feeding tube down his nose resulting in blood coming from his nose and trach.) His neck still swells in the incision site and he does exercises that the speech therapist reccomended so he can learn to swallow again.   Why did this clip come off in the first place?  When will he be able to eat food that hasn't been processed in the blender?  Did we just get a neurosurgeon that had a bad day?

Unfortunately without reviewing your husbands case I can not offer a clinical opinion. There is no literature regarding the chances of a clip "falling off", and I therefore, can not quote a rate. It sounds like you are doing the correct thing with the speech therapy. Good luck.

I forgot to add that it seemed like my husband was being held responsible for this because for some reason, his blood didn't clot against the clip.  Could that be because the slip wasn't placed properly in the first place, resulting in a slow leak that wouldn't allow the blood to clot?
