hereditary motor sensory neuropathy,precautions to be taken

My brother aged 39 yrs has recently been diagnosed to have hereditary motor sensory neuropathy.He has typical friedrich's feet as I saw in one of the books.Movements of his fingers are clumpsy though he himself has not been aware of it.I have also noticed some wasting of small muscles of his hands & feet though not remarked.He is otherwise asymptomatic except for moderate backache since last 7-8 yrs for which Xrays of the back were taken,the X rays show degenerative arthritis,is this back pain because of the HMSN?What precautions should he take to prevent symptoms or the progression of the disease?

Any imbalance in the muskuloskeletal system may accelerate the normal rate of development of age related degenerative changes in the spine, backache is a common manifestation of this.
If the diagnosis is correct, unfortunately there is no cure, only symptomatic treatment. Exercise and physical therapy are important in keeping strong and active.
