herpes ?

I was hoping for some more understanding from my recent hsv2 test results.  The first test came back positive 7.7.  Then I had herpes select test 5.5. Are these results considered high.  I've never had any symptoms or outward signs of any outbreaks.  My husband of 7 years came back negative for hsv 2.  I don't understand how he doesn't have it.  Never use condoms and we have sex regularly.  Is this common for partners to not pass it to other partners when there are no symptoms?  I'm sure that being that I'm positive I got it from a previous partner before him.  But I've never been in a relationship this long  It seems that from what I understand transmition occurs without outbreaks.  Could it be possible that if I've had it for 11 years or more that my chances of outbreaks and transmission decrease?  Should I get retested?  This is all confusing and I still can't believe my results.  Please help!

jasmine, there's a great STD forum here at http://www.medhelp.org/forums/STD-Support/WWWboard.html. There's a lot of activity there and herpes is a pretty strong topic there. You might be able to get even more answers there.

I haven't followed this field closely so take what I am saying with that in mind.  My experience is predominantly with HSV I and with HZ.  Some people have HSV I, the cold sore virus, and never have a cold sore in their lives.

We know that people can shed the virus without having a outbreak.  There is no law that states people who harbor either of these herpes viruses will ever shed the virus - thus exposing a partner to the infection.  It is an unknown.  Sounds like you have been lucky, but 11 years of luck doesn't guarantee that you won't shed in the future.

I would talk to an expert in STD's - Infectious disease specialist - and ask if you should be on suppressive therapy and discuss with your partner the possiblility of using protection.  I have a feeling it will end up being a discussion of "the odds" and that you two will have to decide for yourselves.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
