Dear Joe, I would recommend you research your local library.  They are bound to have a number of books on the history of neurosurgery and will be much more accurate and in depth than the information I could provide you with (besides, your teacher is probably expecting a paper from you, not me).  Even starting with an encyclopedia may be helpful. There may be information on the web that I am not aware of.  Good luck, I hope it is a good learning experience for you.
