husbands calf pain

husbands calf pain

my husband is a 37 yr. old male. Up until about 5 yrs. ago he was an athlete who ran , biked , and weight lifted. Along with that he had good eating habits, has never smoked and does not drink.
His symptoms began with heel pain. Then night cramps in his calfs that would wake him up screaming and leave him weakened for days.
    He was prescribed quinine.
He has since deteriorated to the point where he is in constant pain. He can hardly walk. The only time he is not putting heat on his calves is when he works. He has worn shoes to bed for about a yr. and a half as to prevent his toes from clawing forward which makes his calves want to cramp.
He has seen numerous specialists. Vascular, rheumatiod, neurological, orthopedic,an anesthesiologist for pain management [did not help} a podiatrist, chiropractor, accupuncturist, naturopath. He has had a biopsy with no real abnormal findings. He had a surgery for popliteal artery entrapment which has given no relief.
He currently is taking neurontin. Takes diazepam in the evening to try to relax. We are afraid and do not know where to turn. It is becoming more difficult to get referrals among the specialists. His calves are blotchy red/purplish.

There are a few unusual syndromes which we have seen that may or may not explain your husband's problem. Right away, without any further data, one should consider dystonia, painful-legs-moving-toes, and restless leg syndrome. Please understand, your husband may have none of these at all. But if some doctor (preferably a neurologist) hasn't considered them, you might want to suggest it so the appropriate questions can be asked.
Diagnosis of any of these syndromes is purely by interview and neurologic examination (physical). Some are more difficult to treat than others.
Of course, if you wish a second opinion at CCF, you are welcome to call 800 223-2273 and ask for neurology appointments at 4-5559. I hope this helps. CCF MD mdf.
