hypothalamus not working

by amos150, May 25, 2008 08:12AM
I have had a barrage of tests done and my neurologist has come to the conclusion that I have a malfunctioning hypothalamus that is causing my blood pressure to be elevated, no appetite andthe worst symptom being I am freezing cold 24/7!  I can not stand on any cold surfaces, I can not be in contact with air conditioning, I can not stand to go out in the cold, can not drink or eat anything cold....it is sometimes so bad it is painful.   I feel as if I have been out in a frigid snowstorm for hrs. that is how cold my face and head are sometimes....it goes into my chest and feels like someone has a bag of ice sitting there....I must constantly use a heating pad and warm covers...after I warm up then I sweat profusely and must take off these things...then I rapidly become cold all over again!  The frustrating part is that the doctor says there is no cure for this and I must learn to live with it....very deprssing news.  I am getting a second opinion.  He says it is genetic...although my mother can not think of anyone who ever had it in my family tree.  These symptoms all started around Easter of this year when I tried to switch from Prilosec (for my GERD) to generic form of this drug.  had a headache the whole week I was taking them and then the strange feelings came on...I have been reading about gastrointestinal neuropeptides lately and how they have something to do with temperature regulation????

Hi there.

I'm sorry to read that you are experiencing all of these.  From what you have posted it seems to me that your condition is not a simple matter.  The GERD symptoms and the drug intake for these may all just be incidental in the way your condition presented.  Treatment for this condition may likewise take a lot of consulting and a lot of patience.  I suggest that you suggest to your doctors regarding presenting your case in a multidisciplinary conference (which is usually held regularly in hospitals for difficult conditions) so that more doctors can give their inputs.

I hope everything will be fine.  Regards and God bless.
