imuran and MS

How effective is the use of imuran with MS compared to using
predisone/steriods (or any of the other drugs)??  My wife has had good
results with steriods up to this point in time.  The neurologist are
suggesting the  use of imuran, since my wife had to have her hip replaced
due to avascular necrosis from the use of steroids.
Do you have any statistics or trial results on the use of imuran for
abating/remitting MS type  (i.e., my wife, at this point, seems to
have an exacerbation 1 per 1.5 years and then goes
into remission).
