incomplete myelination

incomplete myelination

My 1 year old daughter has had 2 mri's and one catscan because she cannot focus her eyes (they constantly roll up and down) and her head bobs. Also, she is still not walking or crawling. However, she is able to do things like pattycake, wave, say mama and dada, give high fives, etc. We received the results today of the 2nd mri and it was abnormal.  There is incomplete myelination and ventricules are slightly enlarged. We won't be able to get in to discuss this with the doctor until September. What exactly doe this mean? Will she always be delayed or will she eventually be on track? Will her eyes always roll and head bob?

Hi there.

Myelination is the process where the nerves develop their outer coating which is supposed to accelerate nerve conduction.  Myelination is a long process which starts even before birth and continues until full neurologic and mental development up until puberty.

It is possible that your daughter will still achieve full myelination, not just a the rate comparable with the general population.  There are also specific developmental diseases pertaining to delayed or incomplete myelination and this should be discussed when you get to meed your doctor.

Regards.
