infant seizures

My daughter was born on 3-13-98.She was 8lbs 12 oz. It was a normal pregnancy and a normal delivery, but they did have to give her oxygen after she was born  in the delivery room. She had 3 seizures before we even left the hospital. They did every test EEG, MRI, Spinal tap, cultures & kept her in icu for a week & we still had no answers. They told us it was a good thing that they dont have a reason for them because what they were looking for was not good. They put her on phenabarbotol and released her. As her weight increased they did not increase the med so she had another seizure. They increased the meds and she continued to see a nuerologist. She was progressing good doing all the things she should as far as development, so after 6 months on meds the Dr. decided to start to wein her off of them. After 1 yr with no more problems the Dr. released her from his care. She is now 4 almost 5 yrs old  and has not had another seizure since she was 2 weeks old. SHe was never diagnosed with a disorder. They called them  neonatal seizures. My question is should i have any concerns about them reoccuring.  Thank you  for any info you can give us.

The long term outcome of neonatal seizures depends on many factors with the more important ones being cause of the seizures, severity, and degree of brain disturbance/injury.  For some infants as is the case of your daughter, no cause is ever found despite an extensive workup.  The most common causes are lack of oxygen at birth, brain hemorrhage, infection, stroke, electrolyte disturbances and genetic abnormalities.  Drug withdrawal is also a cause in some populations.  I'm glad that she;s done well so far, but I would continue to observe her closely and make sure she follows up with a pediatric neurologist, preferrably with an epilepsy specialist. Good luck.
