infantile illness and autism

  Hello,
I have a 4 and a half year old with autism.  I have always felt that it was caused by his poor beginning and lack of help from doctors, who never really told me what was the matter in the first place.  He was fine his first 2 months, slept well, ate alot.  After this, he got a gastro illness with a double ear infection.  The diarrhea last well over a month, and from what the nutritionist said, broke down the villi in the intestine and left him unable to absorb food.  He lost muscle tone and was diagnosed with failure to thrive.  He projectile vomited soy formula.  AFter a switch to high calorie nutramigen, he began to gain weight.  He also had troubles with wheezing, hydroceles, anemia, even with a huge appetite, consistent respiratory illness, croup , baby whooping cough etc.  He had a really high fever after his hydrocele op.  He easily got stomach viruses.  Had all sorts of tests, got yeast infections easily, one serious case of thrush also.  I did have an abdomen xray when i was ten says late for my period , my first trimester of ppregnancy.  I also have read about mothers with a strep ionfection , passing on and giving birth defects to their children.  I was diagnosed with one after pregnancy, could that be it.  I would like to get in touch with places in other countries who are using experimental therapies in autistic children. any info would be appreciated
  thank you
dear crystal,
autism is a condition that is not caused by birth defects or infection during
pregnancy. It's neurobiology is still not well understood. The typical
scenario is that mothers report that the child did not have good eye
contact in the first months. there motor skills develop normally.
His infections early on in life did not have a role in the outcome of the
diagnosis.
If you would like more information about autism, i suggest you contact the
NORD who can put you in touch with local support groups and they may provide you
with information on experimental treatment. I am not aware of any trials
