inflammed achilles tendon

inflammed achilles tendon

I used to have occational tightness in my left achilles, I would have to limp because I couldn't fully extend my foot. I thought it was a pinched nerve or just a contraction ? It wasn't a problem because in a few hours it would "pop back in place." (this only happened maybe 3 times in one year) Now suddenly whenever I put on a pair of boots and hike for a few miles the tendon seems to get inflammed and tight and I can feel it rubbing inside when I touch it. It takes about 24 hours to feel normal again (no pain, walk fine) I used to be a big runner but never had any injuries. Is this a common injury? Do you think it will heal itself or would I need surgery possibly?
Thank You for your time! Have a great day. Kirsten

Dear Kirsten:

What you describe sounds like a mechanical problem and not a nerve problem per se.  I think I would see a podiatrist or orthopedist.  It may be that the tendon may get irritated with prolonged use or that there is a "catch" somewhere in the flexing or extending of your foot that is irritating you achilles tendon.  You do not describe muscle weakness nor pain that radiates as one would expect with muscle or nerve problems.  I would reserve surgery for the last ditch effort but only after seeing a orthopod or podiatrist.

Sincerely,
